There’s nothing like researching pools for clients to make you long for summer. The variety of vibe is the striking thing here: you can take in the view from the steps of your sleek infinity zone, while I enjoy cocktails and hi-jinks in my pillared party pool, and over there Faye Dunaway nurses an Oscar glamover by a retro-tiled LA splashery. Something for everyone, united by the water.

The key is to ensure that your pool sits contentedly in its setting.  It’s worth considering what the water will reflect when you are choosing materials for the surround, and of course taking into account (whisper it) the climate where the pool will be located.  The blues will sing very differently amid landscaped topiary than they do sunken into a desert scape.

Shape is another consideration.  You can’t deny the inherent appeal of the traditional rectangle, but existing features such as trees and terraces can be embraced creatively to give a unique outline.  Poolside furniture offers more scope to define your atmosphere, be it ornate elegance or minimalist beachside – don’t forget the loungers for us, we’ve packed our bikinis.
